bbp_logoBranded Evolution and Camacho Cigars Team Up to Achieve Unprecedented Buzz in Cigar Industry Through Online Branded Entertainment Series and Social Media Campaign

Sixty-three Percent of Participants Watched Entire Four-Part Branded Entertainment Series

NEW YORK, May 6 /PRNewswire/ — Branded Evolution, a digital agency specializing in online branded entertainment, today announced “The Black Band Project,” an integrated marketing campaign launched with leading cigar manufacturer Camacho Cigars, exceeded its sign-up goals by more than 500 percent.

“For an industry that does not take well to technology, the campaign outperformed our most optimistic goals for traffic and conversion,” said Dylan Austin, Camacho’s director of marketing. “This success was due in large part to an engaging series of episodic content that drove 63 percent of initial viewers to watch the entire four-part web series.”

Camacho first conceived the concept for “The Black Band Project” in late 2008 and Branded Evolution was hired to develop, produce and distribute the online content. PlaceVine, a web-based brand integration service that connects marketers to top branded entertainment opportunities, facilitated the connection between the two companies.

The campaign objectives for Camacho included the creation of an engaging, opt-in viral marketing campaign, a successful permission-marketing opportunity that would double their age-verified electronic and home mailing lists, and an outlet to sample newly released products. A four-part web-series was created without mention of Camacho until the final “reveal” episode. The viewers followed the satirical Independent Cigar Review Bureau, a fictional agency, whose sole purpose was to educate the world about cigar selection, as they used humorous, guerilla-style tactics to enlighten three characters that represented the most common cigar misconceptions.

“We wanted to create content that would not only entertain viewers, but would also make them feel as if they were actually a part of ‘The Black Band Project’ and compel them to watch the entire series,” says Gino Tomac, Branded Evolution’s creative director who co-wrote and co-produced “The Black Band Project” with HLG Films, the producers of the critically acclaimed web series Break a Leg.

The distribution strategy was conceived to reach the everyday, adult cigar smoker. “Our plan utilized the power of Tremor Media’s targeted reach and in-banner video ad technology, coupled with a social media angle targeting cigar-industry influencers and aficionados. This pushed the campaign to appropriate outlets, allowing it to take on a life of its own in front of our ideal audience,” explains Dave Ford, managing partner of Branded Evolution.

From day one, the campaign captivated the cigar industry and generated sweeping buzz across the country, with thousands of cigar enthusiasts discussing who was behind “The Black Band Project” on social media outlets, including Twitter, Facebook, and cigar-industry message boards and blogs.

  23. Jake Blues Says:

These were good videos, enjoyed them all. Funny, no mention in the press release about the “Free Cigars” offer. Wonder if we all were just lured here so they have advertising numbers to release, or if we will actually get our free cigars.

  30. Andy Says:

I agree with you. I don’t go by mag reviews. I smoke ISOM and Domestic. I smoke what I like and not to impress. And I don’t care what the price is. I smoke a $2 stick if I like it. The point you made is so true. Thanks for the work.

  31. slicerd Says:

Yeah I hope we get the cigars soon I don’t think I have any camacho cigars so this should be interesting. But now that I know who is doing this I can probably figure out what cigars I am getting. Unless they are new cigars/brands then I guess that would still be a surprise.

Wonderful job with the ads, I was really entertained. My only problem is it is so hard to get the damn stores around here and I really would love to try the Legendario, a $5 Camacho would become my every two weeks smoke.

  82. B. Demblewski Says:

  96. Bloody C Says:

I cant wait to get my cigars and roll a fatty boom-batty-blunt. C’mon I know you guys are gonna do the same thing. Juggalo!!!

  97. Schieller Says:

Yeah it was pretty Edgy using the young guys I also watched all four so where are my free Cigars?

  98. tobacmon Says:

Thought all the videos were pretty interesting and got a kick out of all of them!

  99. M Pesarchic Says:

Was only slightly amused while watches your videos. I understand the point, but I thought they were raw and unprofessional. There are other avenues you should try to get your point across instead of trussing some men up and interrogating them. Also, why only men? Women smoke, too. Anyway, the best of luck with your future marketing attemps for Camacho. I hope the cigars are better than the advertising.

P.S. Are you going to put a link in so it would be possible to place it on MySpace instead of Twitter?

  100. M Pesarchic Says:

On second thought, I’m not sure I even want to try your Camacho cigars. I just finished browsing your sites and am getting the impression that your advertising is sexist. Why do you portray your calendar models like that and where are the male models? I guess you think only men like “eye candy”. I’d be looking for another advertising manager right quick.

  101. Martin Beebe Says:

    Loved it!!!
Can’t wait for more from Camacho…

  102. Martin Beebe Says:

Wow… tough crowd here! If you had read on the site it stated that the cigars would be shipped out in early May sometime. Have some patients folks!!! Thanks for some great entertainment Camacho! :-)

  103. A. Echevarria Says:

Excellent campaign! Every video was very entertaining and, like everyone else, I’m looking forward to getting my cigars, but jeez people, learn to have a little patience.
I do remember reading that it would be several weeks before we received them.
Anyway, great job to all involved!

  104. Sam Says:

    good job

  105. Larry Jackowitz Says:

I found the ads great and very entertaining. Honestly, I watched all 4 now I am waiting for my free one.

  106. Anne Says:

I watched ALL four episodes—-so where are my cigars?

  107. douglas bratton Says:

    Really cool job>

  108. Robert F. Cross Says:

I didn’t know what to think at first, but the 2nd episode really got my curiosity. I had to finish watching all episodes of the “Black Band Project”
Great marketing, yet different, which made it interesting. Good Job.

  109. Joe Booth Says:

Having read much of the above, I assess patience is a virtue sparsely resident in our society. However I enjoyed all of the episodes, and I’m one of those who thinks the campaign was pure genius. My favorite bit was the “Rediculousnessness…” banter. If the Academy Awards had a category for 5 second comedies, the two BBP actors would have Oscars.

  110. Bridget Smith Says:

I enjoyed all four videos and liked the point they made concerning a real cigar smoker. Looking forward to receiving cigars for my husband. Thank you for the opportunity of trying them free. Great Advertisement technique.

  111. Bridget Smith Says:

I enjoyed all four videos. Looking forward to receiving cigars for my husband to try them. Great Advertising technique.

  112. Lorin Says:

I thought this was a novel concept. It really got my interest peaked. I watched all 4 episodes and thought they got better with each one. I can not wait until I get my cigars. Keep up they good fight for the education of good cigars.

  113. Fred Says:

Nice history lesson too. I admittedly WAS the Cuban guy (in conversing).

I mean, hey I was on Route 66 and picked-up 4 for $10.00 at a mom and pop general store few years ago, and haven’t found that taste since. Maybe one of the samples coming.

  114. christos michaelides Says:

the ads were very entertaining. i hope you’ll be sending your famous cigars

  115. christos michaelides Says:

great job. keep up the good work

  116. kj Says:

I enjoyed the series of vodeos. When will I receive the cigars??

  117. M. Demblewski Says:

Well, no wonder you guys over-exceeded your limit. With cool videos like that, I was totally amused. LoL! I look forward to trying these cigars now! The sarcasm in the videos was a great audience catcher.
    ~M~

  118. JANICE Says:

I enjoyed all episodes.Where are my cigars?

  119. quinney Says:

loved the videos , now I am waiting to try out the cigars .. so when can we expect to smoke those babies that are better than the cuban which are crap anyway … Ive been looking at my empty mailbox everyday and taking it like a man …

  120. Ray Says:

    loved it!!!

  121. alrex Says:

Too much fun! Now just staring at my mailbox…. :-D

  122. Rob Says:

I loved all the videos! They kicked butt and were so funny but very true! So when do the 63% of us get the awesome smokes?

  123. Ricster60 Says:

Yeah, all in all very entertaining and informative.Hate going to my local shop because of people just like the videos. With the people trying to stop smoking in public where i live ,it would be nice to go out and not be bothered by posers.

  124. Rah55 Says:

This was very cool. Loved the edgy “film noir” thing and it was laugh out loud funny in parts. Great campaign.

  125. Brian Singer Says:

Camacho teamed up with Brand Evolution created a great marketing job. Camacho was already a rather large branded smoke, however the series of clips you guys and gals put together was incredible. I be certain to keep Brand Evolution in mind when I’m ready to market an item (not cigar related) in the short term future. You just brought Popieil in to the 21st century. Hey where’s my sticks…I want to go fishing and have a smoke:) Thanks for the opportunity to particapate .

  126. Steve Counterman Says:

The videos were very entertaining. I couldn’t wait for the next one a week later. All four were very well made. Don’t forget about me when you begin shipping the samplers. I’m looking forward to trying a new brand.

  127. steve Says:

I can’t believe all the morons whining about a few free cigars. The man said they would be shipped in mid May. I guess they can watch videos but can’t read.

  128. Dawn Says:

The shows were informative and imaginative, But come on where’s the smokes! I was just reading how excited everyone was because you surpassed your expectations of people signing up to listen! Sooo now lets our end of the Bargin! Thanks. Keep up the great work!

  129. rae Says:

going to send my cigars to my son who is a Marine serving in Iraq.

  130. Kristel Says:

I really enjoyed watching all of you. It was a real good job.

  131. Doug and Jennifer Stewart Says:

What a wonderful idea! I loved the videos and thought the whole campain was pure genius.

  132. Joe Says:

I loved the video all-in-all. I love the look, smell and taste of cigars. I have not had the pleasure or the opportunity to try a Camacho Cigar. I will be watching for the cigar to show up in the mail.

  133. Brian Says:

Although I mentioned it in a joking way, I agree with comment #128 from Steve. It’s just a few sticks and after the great success of the Camacho and Brand Evolutions marketing team lay back and give them a chance to get it together. To me it’s incredible what the return factor was on this promo, 63% is fantastic, when you think about factory rebates the last figures I remember is less than a 25% return at best. Think of this promo as a factory rebate and it blows away any factory rebate marketing in modern business economic history. I’m most impressed with the marketing figures rather than having to wait for a few sticks. Consider this a factory rebate and you didn’t spend a dime unless you’re using an ancent dial up connection.

  134. Andry Says:

Hello from Russian. This “Great series” is very very very good job! I love it! Andry.

  135. LALA Says:

Loved the episodes. To tell you the truth, all them folks were me back in the days when I first started smoking cigars…but you have informed and educated me to try something new to my liking… Thank You for inviting me.

  136. tobacmon Says:

What I went through to view all the videos was a challenge to say the least. I look forward to my rewards. Thanks for the oportunity and for a great product.

  137. Travis Mace Says:

Great campaign!!! Have to say I’m excited to try your cigars!! I watched each episode a couple of times!!! Hope to see more of your work in the future! Will be checking the mail!! Thank-You!!

  138. paul love Says:

looking forward to puffing on one.

  139. Dave Says:

Thanks for the invite to watch the videos – I found them very entertaining and clever. I’m looking forward to trying the smokes!

  140. Aaron Says:

    Cant wait to try one!

  141. John Stead Says:

So I watched the vids..they were pretty cool…but like the other are saying where are the cigars? I was hoping to taste them unless sad to say you guys are the posers for telling all us men that there were free cigars only to lure us in and then you want us to order something…

  142. nozero Says:

    Hey Camacho!

Pretty cool videos IMO. I’m looking forward to trying your cigars. I don’t recall having tried any in the past, but hey, I forget stuff and they’re not in my log yet.

I was wondering, how many cigars you’re having to ship out and the cost? Though that may well be “classified”.

I hope this campaign is everything you hoped it would be.

    Respectfully,
    nozero

    Where are my Camacho Cigars?????

  146. brayndeded Says:

As with all the others, I loved the videos. Really kept you hooked and waiting for the next one. Great thinking, do it again and again! Hold a siminar to teach other companies how to market the same way. Im a marketing man, heck, hire me, Ill do it for a few more great Camacho cigars, T-shirts, and other swag. I wait everyday for my mail, but realize that these guys had no idea how big this campaign would be. We all need to understand that its going to take a bit more time to compile all our info and ship out these smokes.
That being said…I wish I had a jeanie to blink the eyes and fast forward time.

  147. concerned Says:

Since my other reply was deleted, here it is at the end on May and still no cigars. Whats up with that?????

  153. charles Says:

    Not yet, Amy. Still waiting.

  154. Andy Says:

    no cigars yet…

  155. Larry Says:

I signed up for the free cigars, but haven’t received any yet, either.

  156. Tim R Says:

I’m not able to read the replies from Camacho on the inquiries about where are cigars are. In good faith I also watched every episode and took notes, was told I’d receive my cigars in a “few weeks”. Since ya’ll had my e-mail address anyway ( You sent me Black Band updates), why not send me an e-mail explaining what’s up?

Please keep the credibility in my view by taking care of this.

    Thanks ahead of time,

    Tim R

  157. Daryl M. Says:

I really enjoyed the videos but I am now wondering where the cigars are.I see some have received them. I personally think Camacho needs to let the rest of us know whats up with the deliveries for the rest of us. It has been a long wait with no information about whats happening.

  158. Chris B Says:

Loved the marketing on this, watched the 4 videos. I’m patiently waiting for the cigars. All that great marketing and then no challenge at the end. Please don’t fail us after a brilliant marketing concept.
Please give us an update. It have been 3 months since the 4th (final) video.

Waiting with cutter and lighter in hand.

  159. Scott Britt Says:

Ladies and Gentlemen, recieived the cigars on Monday the 27th and wow! they were terrific. I will certainly be buying a box or three in the near future. Looks like The Black Band Project was a roaring success and opened my eyes to your brands. I am very willing to participate in any future marketing campaigns! Thank you all and I wish you continued luck and prosperity. -Your newest customer for life, in Texas.

  160. Kevin Says:

I still thought the video series was great. I am however starting to wonder where the cigars promised went to? I have been waiting and waiting for months and now August and never received my cigars. Starting to smell a marketing rat here. Any word from anyone else? Did you really receive your cigars?

  161. Fred Says:

    Still haven’t gotten mine either.

  162. Robert Says:

Well, it’s been a bit over 5 months now. Last I heard, I was to expect delivery on the coming weekend, however that was a month ago. Still anticipating they’ll come someday.
